Vincenzo Mistretta is a filmmaker and visual artist who works in Film, Video, Installation, Sculpture and Painting. His interests lie in exposing the history of the work by revealing the structural elements and its process. His films deal with the hand manipulation of the celluloid remnant of the early materialist and structuralist film movements. He also experiments with a hybrid narrative form and documentary. The themes in his work spread from cultural identity, political activism, and using film language as a way to challenge the concept of the narrative. His interests in political activism has led him to produce a series of Documentary video’s on the Women in Black peace network in Buffalo and NYC. In 2006 he was awarded a fellowship from the Fulbright Foundation to continue his research and documentation of the Women in Black peace network in Rome, Italy.
He has received grants from The Vinciguerra Filmmaking Grant, The Niagara Council for the Arts, NY, The Erie County Arts Council, NY, and others. He has screened and exhibited his work internationally including Open Video Projects in Rome, Italy, Netwerk / Center for Contemporary Art , Brussels, Belgium, O’Curt Film Festival in Naples, Italy, The New York International Film Festival, New York City, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Buffalo, NY, and others.
